Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS)

HEMS is an initialism used to define emergency helicopter services. There are a variety of ways in which HEMS is utilized with the two most prevalent being in the transport of critical care patients to or between hospital facilities or from accident scenes and in the transport of critical care staff to staging sites or the scenes of accidents where their care is needed.

There are only a handful of HEMS specific helicopter providers operating within the United States and beyond their services, use of a privately contracted helicopter may be necessary. This has led to the implementation of HEMS type services to the type of helicopter service principal providers have included in their menu of service options.

The HEMS Process

Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS)

Travel coordinators work alongside providers to ensure that the appropriate clinical staff are available and trained to attend to the need of the patient while in flight and during ground transport. HEMS is additionally a mainstay in delivering the emergent arrival of doctors and clinical staff to accident scenes, staging sites following disasters, to remote destinations wherein medical services are undeserved or during evacuations and natural disaster relief efforts.

Some would argue that the use of HEMS was established to deliver a means for hospitals to market their capabilities by having their helicopters arrive at the scene, but others have seen the impact helicopter services have created when time is of the essence and ground transport may be delayed.
