When it comes to complex installations in challenging locations, Fair Lifts Helicopter Services is the go-to solution. In a recent project, we were tasked with the new installation, removal, and complete swaps of HVAC units at the Costco in Lynnwood, Washington. This project was conducted on behalf of Five Star Mechanical, a family-owned commercial HVAC company based in Lakewood, Washington, known for their unparalleled service and value. The Project

The project involved the new installation of two units, removal of three units, and complete swaps with curb adapters of five units. In total, 12 units went up while 8 came down. One of the units weighed a hefty 8,148 pounds, with the rest below 4,000 pounds. To accomplish this task, we utilized a Eurocopter AS332L1 Super Puma helicopter. This helicopter model is known for its superior lift performance and stability.
The Advantages of a Helicopter Lift

Helicopters offer unique advantages for heavy lifts in areas that cranes can’t reach. They can maneuver in tight spaces, hover precisely over a target, and lift heavy loads with ease. In this case, the 8,148 lb unit located in the center of the building required approximately a 240’ reach, which would’ve necessitated a 400-ton crane with a luffing jib. However, using the AS332L1 Super Puma, we were able to complete the job within 1.5 hours, as opposed to the three days it would have taken for the 400-ton crane.
The Challenges
The project presented several challenges. Firstly, the Costco property/building could only be evacuated on a Sunday, limiting our window of operation. Secondly, we had to use a 50’ long-line to circumvent what would’ve otherwise been an impossible road closure and problematic residential evacuations, all the while adhering to the FAA’s risk mitigation requirements. Furthermore, we had to expedite both FEDEX and UPS shipments to ensure necessary aircraft parts were delivered and installed by Precision mere days before the scheduled lift date. Even with these challenges, Fair Lifts had just three weeks to plan, organize, and execute this heavy lift project during the busiest season of the year.
