ISM Raceway History and New Changes for 2019
Built in 1964, Phoenix Raceway was placed on an area that was once the original land survey point for all of what later became the state of Arizona. Surrounded by the Estrella Mountains on the outskirts of Avondale gives the raceway a unique setting and the addition of a “dogleg” had to be made during building to accommodate the terrain. “Monument Hill” along turns 3 and 4 provides a unique view of races, at the top of the hill is the USGS benchmarker known as Gila and Salt River Meridian, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In 1991, the old 2.5 miles (4.0 km) road course was removed and replaced by a 1.51 miles (2.43 km) infield road course.
NASCAR announced that it would hold a second annual race weekend at Phoenix Raceway beginning in 2005. After the announcement the track has lights installed so that the new races could be run in the evenings. Phoenix Raceway and ISC announced a $178 million renovation project in January 2017 called the Phoenix Raceway Project Powered by DC Solar. The project is expected to wrap up before the races in November 2018.
New amenities once renovations are completed in Nov 2018:
Grandstand seating capacity will be 45,000. Further renovations will include new escalators and elevators, new souvenir areas and guest services, EMS and First Aid. Additional fan areas including a new fanzone, DC solar fan, Busch Garage, new Corporate Hospitality, and new Guest Services and Ticketing buildings. Wi-Fi will be available throughout the venue as well as flat screen TVs in common areas.
Additional changes to the track will include:
Grandstands in the front stretch will be removed. The finish/starting line will be moved flipping the turn numbering. Reconfiguration of pit road including the movement of the pit entrance, extending the road stalls and tightening the radius.
With the new renovations expected on the track, it is only a matter of time before more guests will fit at the raceway, bringing in new business and crowds from all over the country. Will you be there?
