The History of the Michigan International Speedway
The Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan, was built in 1967 by Lawrence H. LoPatin, a Detroit land developer. In 1972, Roger Penske bought the speedway for roughly $2 million, and upgraded the facilities, increasing the track’s seating capacity to 125,000. Finally, in 1999, the speedway was acquired by International Speedway Corporation (ISC) and in 2000 the track was named once again the Michigan International Speedway. That same year, 10,800 seats were added. From 2004 to 2005, major renovations took place, providing race fans with new areas to view sponsor displays, as well as purchase merchandise and concessions during breaks of on-track activity. A three-story viewing tower was also erected.
