AH-64 Apache attack helicopter has advanced in technology to become one of the deadliest gunships in combat. However, the crew must be prepared for any outcome, in instances where they find themselves trapped behind enemy lines.
While the crews in most of their fixed-wing cousins can eject at will when things go wrong in combat, Apache doesn’t provide such luxuries. To make the matter worse, these combat gunships fly at low altitudes, a scenario that denies them an opportunity to cover more ground away from enemies’ forces before the crew members are terra firma.
It is in this regard that the crew has to carry unique gear to help them survive for as long as possible until they are found by Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) or whisked out of the war zone by another Apache.
Notably, the Apache Longbows were introduced into the British Military about a decade and a half ago, and ever since they have seen their fair share in combat against terror and in NATO operation in Libya. Currently, they are being recapitalized to grow their capabilities and become AH-64E Apache Guardian.
The new version will include new upgrades but the survival gear the crew carries is unlikely to change much.
A video created by NATO explicitly indicates what the crewmen aboard Apache carry into combat.
One of the crucial pieces of equipment is the short-barreled SA80, which is a compact aircrew survival rifle paired with a Glock 19 pistol.
Another interesting fact is that Apache has conducted dozens of extractions from war zones by members of its crew strapping themselves to the side of the gunships, a position that helps them to whisk the person in distress quickly from the ground. By doing so, the personnel trapped behind enemy lines are extracted fast without the need to wait for hours for CSAR. More importantly, the process gives the enemy less time to surround them, a scenario that helps to mitigate the event of Prisoners of War (POW) or casualties.
Now you know what’s integrated aboard the British Military Apache crew’s survival kit.
