Stonington—An MH-60 Jayhawk Coast Guard helicopter played a critical role in a life-saving rescue on Sunday, responding to an injured crewman aboard a fishing boat 60 miles south of Nantucket, Mass. In emergencies at sea, the Coast Guard can mean the difference between life and death, and this mission was no exception.
The Coast Guard District One was said to have received a distress call from the crew of The Furious at approximately 3:30 a.m. The crew informed the watch-standers at the time that a 41-year-old crew member on board had injured his hand. They phoned the coast guard looking for assistance in getting him the treatment he deserved.
A few minutes later, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew was dispatched from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod to carry out the retrieve and transport mission. The crew arrived at approximately 7:00 a.m where they hoisted the fisherman in a scene straight out of your favorite rescue movies. The MH-60 Jayhawk then rushed the injured crewman to Massachusetts General Hospital where he was to be treated.
