A Brief History of The Glen
The tiny hamlet of Watkins Glen, New York turned into a street racing scene in 1948 when an enterprising law student had an idea to create European-style racing. In an almost Cinderella like story, the Glen began it’s racing fame on “The Day They Stopped the Trains”, October 2, 1948. As the first post WWII in the U.S., the Glen became famous for hosting the top names in American sports car racing until 1953 when racing was moved to a temporary location to allow for construction on the track.
In 1957, The Glen hosted its first professional race, the NASCAR Grand Stock Car event. From then, the track hosted the Watkins Glen Grand Prix in 1971-1980, and after the expansion of 71’ the track began hosting a slew of additional races including the Can-Am, Trans-Am, Six Hours, Formula 5000 and CART Indy Car Series.
Today, the Glen is an official NASCAR track with an international reputation and is known as the track holding the first professional race to be run on the permanent 2.3-mile road course. Now, thousands of racefans and racing history buffs visit WG to enjoy the races and feel a little bit of nostalgia. Although the track has undergone many renovations, it still has the same old race feeling no matter how many times you visit.
