Fair Lifts Helicopter Services is proud to spotlight our collaboration with S&B Christ Consulting, LLC on a project of immense environmental and cultural significance. Nestled approximately 35 miles north of Reno, Nevada, in the south Honey Lake Valley along the north end of the Virginia Mountains, the project site is home to a rich tapestry of natural and cultural wonders.
The Project: A Protective Barrier for Nature and History
The primary objective was the installation of 1.5 miles of steel jack-rail fence in accordance with Bureau of Land Management requirements. But this wasn’t just any fence; it was a protective barrier designed with multiple purposes:
- Sheep Springs and Riparian Area: The fence ensures that livestock are kept out of the riparian area, preserving the natural habitat and ensuring the spring remains uncontaminated.
- Archaeological Sites: The region is steeped in history, with three significant archaeological sites. The fence acts as a safeguard, preventing inadvertent damage and preserving these sites for future generations.
- Sage Grouse Lek Nesting Area: The sage grouse, a bird native to the sagebrush ecosystem, is known for its elaborate courtship dance. The fence protects their lek nesting areas, ensuring these birds can continue their unique mating rituals undisturbed.
Given the sensitive nature of the area, traditional land transportation was not an option. The terrain was rugged, and any heavy machinery could risk damaging the very sites the project aimed to protect. This is where helicopters came into play.

The Bell 212 at Work
Two Days, Two Helicopters, One Goal
The project’s execution was meticulously planned over two days, with each day dedicated to a specific helicopter. The first day saw the deployment of a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, renowned for its heavy lifting capabilities. On the second day, a Bell 212 took to the skies, ensuring that the materials were placed with precision.
The challenges were manifold. Locations for the fences underwent last-minute changes, adding to the complexity. However, the adaptability and expertise of both teams ensured that these changes were addressed efficiently. The decision to use two helicopters on two separate days ensured that there was no rush, and each section of the fence was installed with the utmost care and precision.

Team Effort and Dedication
Alexandria Yono, the project manager from S&B Christ Consulting, showcased exemplary leadership. Typically overseeing projects from the sidelines, she stepped into the field, ensuring every detail was attended to. With her were team members James (Jim) Crisp, Mike Samudio, and Brian Christ. Their combined efforts, especially in mastering the nuances of helicopter rigging in a short span, were commendable.
This collaboration between Fair Lifts Helicopter Services and S&B Christ Consulting, LLC wasn’t just about completing a project; it was about preserving a piece of Nevada’s rich natural and cultural heritage. We are honored to have played a role in this mission and look forward to future collaborations that make a difference.
