On January 21, 2021, Lockheed Martin’s Sikorsky facility in Troy, Alabama, was awarded a major MH-60T contract from the U.S. Coast Guard. The deal, valued at over $206 million, will be used to procure 25 new hulls for the Coast Guard’s MH-60T helicopter. The introduction of these new hulls will see this lifesaver aircraft fly for a minimum of ten years, guaranteeing more work for the Pike County facility.
The Troy-based facility, Sikorsky, is recognized as among the leading companies in maintaining and repairing MH-60T helicopters. Richard Shelby, U.S. Senator, applauded the decision in a statement. He said that Coast Guard’s move award the contract to Sikorsky proves that the facility offers world-class services and a remarkable track record.
The senator added that the contract about the MH-60T helicopters awarded to the facility is substantial and vital to the Coast Guard. This is because it enables the Coast Guard to meet their needs and requirements in its daily operations. Besides, he added that he is pleased Sikorsky’s Troy facility was selected and anticipating the impact of the $200 million on the Wiregrass region.
Shelby is the Senate Committee on Appropriations chairman, which has continuously increased funding over each Coast Guard’s previous three fiscal years. The funds were used to procure new hulls for the MH-60T helicopter. Recently, Shelby provided another $48 million for Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk helicopters sustainment. The aircraft is a close cousin of the Blackhawk and Seahawk variants.
The Sikorsky facility is a manufacturing company located in Troy with an employee capacity of about 400. It manufactures variants of the MH-60 medium-lift helicopter, and it a Lockheed Martin Company. Besides, Lockheed Martin has a Pike County strike systems facility.
