This past Saturday night, three people had to be rescued from treacherously steep cliff terrain near Muir Beach in Marin County, California, near San Francisco. Despite their proximity to heavily settled urban areas and infrastructure, the individuals became trapped and had to call for help.
At 8:15 pm, U.S Coast Guard and Southern Marin Fire Protection District responders received the reports of people being unable to escape from where they were stranded in the coastal park.
The Coast Guard and other agencies arrived on the scene rapidly afterward and were able to pull the three hikers up from their precarious perch by shortly after 9 pm. Two other hikers with the trapped group of civilians were then able to climb to the top of the cliff by themselves according to fire district sources.
A video of the coordinated rescue effort was posted by the Coast Guard onto its Twitter account. In the video, one of the agency’s MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopters can be seen evacuating the rescues from where they had become stuck.
No injuries were reported despite the fact that “”Cliff operations are inherently risky for both ground parties and air crew, and are significantly higher risk during nighttime,” according to Eric Schwartz, Dolphin aircraft commander for Air Station San Francisco.
Schwartz further explained that “We were glad the conditions allowed us to save the three lives alongside our partner agencies.”
Hikers and vacationers exploring the beaches along the coast of Marin County and other rugged seashore areas of California are cautioned to keep away from cliff edges by the Southern Marin fire district.
Marin County and Marin Beach are both located close to well developed urban and suburban neighborhoods. Despite this, hikers in the more rugged parts of these places can easily become trapped or even injured if they’re careless or too confident because of their proximity to civilization.
This scenario happens often throughout many parks in the U.S. despite their relative closeness to settled areas. When hikers become trapped, it’s all too common for either government emergency rescue or private charter emergency helicopter services like Fair Lifts to have to send in professionally trained pilots for a rapid evacuation.
