In the recent past, health emergencies and crashes have been rampant in Central Virginia, and they take a lot of resources. But now hospitals in the region are thankful for the extra support they are receiving in their pursuit to discharge quality medical care services.
Chippenham hospital has gone the extra mile to purchase a new medical helicopter.
According to a report released by William Lunn, who is the CEO of Chippenham and Johnston-Willis Hospital, the medical caregiver is currently developing a level one trauma program in the hospital.
He continued to expound that they have been conducting an average of one or two flights per day in their bid to save lives.
Medical emergencies in the area are quite prevalent. This was evident on the first day Air Care Eagle was commissioned to service back on December 1st, 2020, it received a distress call. Now as the population of Central Virginia continues to grow, especially south of the river, the need for emergency medical helicopters is also on the rise.
Currently, active medical helicopters operating in the region include Virginia State Police Med Flight, LifeEvac which has its allegiance to VCU Medical Center, and now Air Care Eagle, which is the first helicopter serving Central Virginia.
This helicopter towards the end of the year 2020, received 585 distress calls, and out of these numbers, it airlifted 288 of these patients within a 60-mile radius of Richmond.
Notably, Air Care Eagle helicopter operates and executes its missions within a 100-mile radius.
While Lunn understands the helicopter is parked at his hospital, he believes it’s an asset designed to give back to society and serve the whole community.
According to a statement he released to the news outlets, he pointed out the helicopter was not only tailored to serve crash victims, but also those who suffer other medical emergencies such as stroke and heart attack.
He concluded by admitting there were a plethora of opportunities for this bird and other medical helicopters available out there in the market.
