Injured Swimmer Rescued from Water Fall by Emergency Response Helicopter

Emergency - Helicopter Services

A swimmer in Swallow Falls State Park was rescued using emergency helicopter services after slipping on a rock and sustaining a serious head injury. The incident, which occurred at Tolliver Falls, required an urgent aerial response due to the severity of the injury and the challenging terrain that made traditional rescue methods impractical.

Swift Aerial Rescue Operation by Maryland State Police

At approximately 5 p.m. on Friday, Maryland State Police Aviation Command deployed Trooper 5, an AW-139 twin-engine multi-role helicopter, from Cumberland Airport to execute a hoist rescue. Given the rugged landscape and the potential dangers associated with head injuries, law enforcement quickly determined that a helicopter extraction was the safest and fastest option.

Upon arrival, Trooper 5 hovered at 275 feet above the waterfall while ground rescue crews from Garrett County Emergency Services stabilized the injured swimmer. A Maryland State Police rescue technician was lowered from the aircraft with essential medical equipment to assess the victim and prepare for hoisting.

Critical Medevac to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital

Once safely secured, the patient was lifted into the helicopter, where the Trooper 5 crew provided advanced medevac care while en route to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia. The rapid response helped ensure the injured swimmer received immediate medical attention.

The rescue operation involved multiple emergency agencies, including:

  • Maryland State Police
  • Garrett County Emergency Services
  • Garrett Rescue Squad
  • Maryland State Systems Communications Center (SYSCOM)
  • Fire departments from nearby towns
  • Swift Water Special Operations Team

This collaborative effort highlights the essential role that emergency helicopter services play in difficult rescue situations.
