A heavy-lift helicopter hovering very low was the center of attention at Crabtree Valley Mall. The chopper that was flying a replacement HVAC unit to the mall on Sunday morning caught many bystanders off-guard and apparently attracted a crowd.
This was quite an unusual occurrence that the residents of the region did not witness every day. According to eyewitnesses, the helicopter hovered near the parking deck with a gigantic AC unit hanging beneath it and swinging in the wind. The heavy-lift helicopter was used as a sky crane to ferry the AC and lower it to safety.
Eye witness reports indicate that at a particular point the helicopter landed on a parking lot located at Crabtree. Some alarmed people called WRAL to report this unusual occurrence. The helicopter had been circling the mall for a significant amount of time and the people needed to know what was going on at the mall.
This event took place for more than an hour. In fact, a significant number of drivers parked their cars to witness this once-in-a-lifetime spectacle. The Raleigh police were also monitoring this event closely. More importantly, traffic slowed on Glenwood as the drivers paused to watch.
However, this being a heavy-lift helicopter, it was natural for it to take time before lowering the AC unit. The pilot had to look for a safe spot to lower the load without damaging it. The process of delivering the load was a success and the whole event wowed many people.
Finally, it is imperative to note in instances where you see an aerial crane there is no need to be alarmed. The helicopters that conduct the undertaking are designed for solely this purpose. More importantly, the pilots are also highly trained for this purpose.
