Israel’s Air Force’s Need For New Heavy-Lift Helicopters

The pressure is mounting on the Israeli General Staff to demonstrate urgency in the procurement of a replacement heavy-lift helicopter for its outdated CH-53. The IAF decided to replace the helicopter in 2016, and two possible options have been identified as possible upgrades: The Lockheed Martin Sikorsky CH-53K and the Bell Boeing CH-47.

The commander of the IAF, Maj. General Amikam Norkin took General Aviv Kachavi, IDF Chief of Staff, on a long-distance flight t ‘enemy’ territory to conduct a rescue mission of a downed pilot. During the flight, Maj. Gen Norkin emphasized the need to have replacement helicopters to protect Israeli borders from foreign threats.

The urgency was further compounded earlier this year when the aging CH-53, carrying a total of 13 soldiers, caught fire while airborne, forcing the pilots to make an emergency landing in an open field in the southern region.

The CH-53D was first flown in 1969 and became the IAF’s primary air transportation for soldiers and military equipment on several missions. Although efforts have been made over the years to upgrade the helicopter’s tech, electronic, and missile defense systems, the recent accident has compelled IAF to move aggressively in the selection of a replacement heavy-lift helicopter. It plans to do so by 2025.

The IAF is budgeting for 20 new heavy-lift helicopters, which means that its CH-53D fleet will be undergoing a complete overhaul. Now the ball is on the IAF’s court, to choose either Bell Boeing’s Chinook 47F or Lockheed Martin Chinook 53K.

Both options have undergone test flights, and IAF pilots have compiled a comprehensive report on the viability of the aircraft. Some of the details include the life cycle costs, capabilities and performance, and projected availability.
