Defiant X Likely to Become A Futuristic Army Future Long-Range Assault Helicopter

Government Helicopters - Helicopters

On January 25, 2021, Sikorsky and Boeing Co. officials revealed Defiant X, an upgraded compound coaxial helicopter. This is a futuristic helicopter used by troops going to compact zones, proposed to the U.S. Army’s Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft. Defiant X resembles its predecessor, the SB>1 Defiant, but accompanies significant upgrades suitable for the troops.

The Defiant X comes with a sleek-bodied design and a modified exhaust system ideal for reducing the aircraft’s heat signature. It also has tricycle-style landing gear, improving stability when landing or taxing in combat and austere environments. The Defiant X integrates Sikorsky’s experimental high-speed compound helicopters also available in the SB1>Defiant.

According to Heather McBryan, sales, and marketing director for Boeing’s Vertical program, the company has made various aircraft enhancements. Some of the critical adjustments made include reduced thermal signature and improved aerodynamic handling. The announcement comes when the Army plans to consider a Future Long-Range Assault aircraft, FLRAA, and a Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft, FARA, in its Future Vertical Lift Initiative (FVL).

Most of the upgrades made on the Defiant X came with the motive of meeting the Army’s proposed requirements. Jay Macklin, business development director for Sikorsky Future Vertical Lift program, stated that the Defiant X will go twice as fast as the existing Black Hawk, another Sikorsky product. Though Sikorsky-Boeing declined to provide details regarding the upgrades, this new aircraft will likely surpass the SB1>Defiant speed of 211 knots.

The companies added that engineers improved simulation, PSTB, and flight hours for the new Defiant X. It also comes with an autonomy layer and electronic systems, making the new aircraft ideal for troops. Notably, the Army aims at replacing its UH-60 Black Hawks and AH-64 Apache attack helicopter with the new FVL aircraft. With the contract presumed to be awarded in 2022, Sikorsky-Boeing’s Defiant X and Bell Textron’s V-280 Valor tiltrotor aircraft are in the FLRAA competition.
