Fair Lifts Helicopter Services recently completed a highly complex helicopter radar relocation project for the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, demonstrating the power and efficiency of helicopter lifts for infrastructure transport. The project, which took place at 1717 N Bayshore Dr, Miami, FL 33132, required the airlifting of a radar system and radar cabinet to a new location. This challenging mission was completed on February 8th, 2024 and showcased the superiority of helicopter lifts over traditional cranes in urban environments where space constraints are a significant factor.
Challenges in Radar Relocation
The radar relocation project posed several challenges, including difficult terrain, limited reach, and the absence of a feasible setup area for a crane. These constraints made traditional crane operations impractical and costly. After careful evaluation, Fair Lifts and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office determined that a helicopter lift was the most efficient and cost-effective solution.
Using a crane would have been significantly more expensive due to the building’s height and the limited ground space available for setup. Instead, Fair Lifts utilized the Bell 407 helicopter, a versatile aircraft renowned for its lifting capabilities, maneuverability, and precision.

Bell 407
The Bell 407 is well-regarded for its high payload capacity, speed, and agility. It is powered by a Rolls-Royce 250-C47B turbine engine, delivering excellent performance in precision lift operations. The aircraft’s spacious cabin and advanced avionics make it ideal for complex aerial transport projects like this one. With the ability to lift up to 2,500 lbs, the Bell 407 was perfectly suited for moving the radar and its components efficiently and safely.
Operational Plan: A Multi-Day, Multi-Lift Strategy
The project required a meticulously planned two-day operation involving multiple airlifts. Fair Lifts executed the relocation as follows:
Day 1: Initial Lifts from the Legacy Site

Legacy Site and Flight Path to Landing Zone 1
- Lift 1: Dismount and airlift the radar system from the legacy site to Landing Zone 1 (LZ1).
- Lift 2: Dismount and airlift the radar cabinet from the legacy site to LZ1.
- Preparation: Kirms Communications prepared the old radar mount for airlifting by cutting it into manageable sections.
Day 2: Complex Multi-Lift Operation

Landing Zone 2 to New Site Flight Path
The second day of operations was significantly more intensive, requiring up to five separate lifts to move all necessary components to the new installation site.
- Lift 1: Airlift sections of the radar mount from LZ2 to the new location.
- Lift 2: Airlift the radar system from LZ2 to the new location.
- Lift 3: Airlift the radar cabinet from LZ2 to the new location.
- Lift 4: Airlift the old radar mount from the legacy site to LZ1.
- Lift 5: If required, conduct an additional lift for any remaining components.
