DEC forest rangers first received the emergency call at 1:18 p.m. and quickly mobilized a response team using a six-wheeled off-road vehicle. However, after assessing the severity of the hiker’s injury, they determined that a ground evacuation would be too dangerous and slow. At 4:50 p.m., a helicopter medevac rescue was requested, and the chopper arrived shortly after for an immediate airlift.
