Prefab equipment shelter helicopter lifts demand precision, power, and specialized aerial expertise. On February 1, 2025, Fair Lifts successfully executed such a project in Skowhegan, Maine, partnering with Management and Construction Solutions, Inc. (MACS) to position large prefabricated shelter components at 1329 Waterville Rd, Skowhegan, ME 04976.
This turnkey operation involved transporting and placing two prefab shelter frames, each split into two sections, along with heavy coil units. Each frame section weighed 5,750 lbs and measured 22′ x 10′ x 10′, while the coil units weighed 6,300 lbs and measured 20′ x 8′. The mission: complete the job safely, efficiently, and without ground interference—making a helicopter the ideal solution.
Partnering with MACS for Industrial Precision
MACS is a leader in industrial construction, managing complex projects from Front-End Loading (FEL) through commissioning. Their focus on safety, accountability, and performance made them the perfect partner for this time-sensitive prefab shelter lift, where Fair Lifts provided the aerial expertise to ensure success.
The Aircraft: Sikorsky S-61N

To execute this lift with precision, Fair Lifts utilized the Sikorsky S-61N, a proven and reliable medium-lift helicopter trusted across industries for its balance of lifting power and operational agility. Originally developed for maritime and search-and-rescue use, the S-61N has become a workhorse for utility and construction operations thanks to its long rotor span, dual engines, and robust payload capability of up to 8,000 lbs.
Key Aircraft Advantages:
- Lift capacity of approximately 8,000 lbs
- Proven track record in utility and industrial lifts
- Twin-turbine reliability for safety and efficiency
- Stable hover performance for vertical insertion
Project Breakdown: Rigging, Lifts, and Coils
The lift was meticulously planned to align with MACS’s schedule. Each shelter frame was split into two segments, rigged with a four-point bridle system and color-coded quick hooks for rapid attachment to the Sikorsky’s lift hook—minimizing hover time.
After setting the frames, the team carefully lowered the coil units vertically into place through the roof openings. This required exact coordination between the aircrew, ground team, and MACS engineers to ensure each coil aligned perfectly within the structure.
Lift Sequence:
- Lift and set first frame section
- Lift and set second frame section
- Repeat for second shelter
- Lower coils vertically into position

Why Helicopter Lifting Was the Ideal Choice
Compared to cranes, helicopter lifting offered:
- Zero ground disruption (no crane mats or roads)
- Faster execution (hours vs. days)
- Pinpoint placement accuracy
- Minimal onsite footprint
