Netflix’s home renovation reality series, “Instant Dream Home”, is renowned for its rapid transformations of deserving families’ homes. In the first season’s third episode, titled “A Room With A View”, Fair Lifts Helicopter Services played a critical role in the surprise renovation of a firefighter EMT’s bungalow, overcoming unique challenges and delivering excellence.
Project Overview
Based in Atlanta, GA, Fair Lifts was tasked with a unique challenge: to lift a 1200-pound skylight onto a roof in a congested area. The operation was part of the surprise renovation for a firefighter EMT, the first person in his family to own a house. Because of his demanding job, he hadn’t had time to make the bungalow he shares with his partner and mom a real home. The Instant Dream Home team organized a 12-hour remodel for him, with the helicopter lift being a significant part of the episode.

The Advantages of a Helicopter Lift
Helicopters offer unique advantages for heavy lifts in areas that cranes can’t reach. They can maneuver in tight spaces, hover precisely over a target, and lift heavy loads with ease. In this case, the congested area and the weight of the skylight made a helicopter lift the ideal solution. The production team had initially attempted to lift the skylight by hand during their preparation for the shoot day, but it cracked under the stress. This left them with only one option: a helicopter lift.

The Challenges
The project presented several challenges. Firstly, everyone on the ground and in the air had to be tested within 72 hours of the project day due to the ongoing pandemic. Secondly, we were facing flight restrictions due to a Georgia State University football game at one stadium while Alabama played Miami at Mercedes Benz Stadium to launch their seasons. Coordinating the flight amidst these restrictions was tricky, but our team was up to the task.
The Operation
For the operation, we used a Sikorsky S-55T helicopter. The lift was conducted in one take, just as seen in the episode, demonstrating our team’s precision and expertise. Despite the challenges, the operation was carried out without a hitch, contributing significantly to the transformation of the bungalow into a dream home. The helicopter accomplished the feat quickly and without problems, showcasing the effectiveness of helicopter lifts in challenging situations.
